The Cure - In Between Days
Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside
Here's the average person's reaction when hearing this song for the first time: "Wow! This music is so infectious and invigorating, it's like my soul is soaring above the clouds. I've never felt more alive!"
And then the lyrics kick in.
The Smithereens - Afternoon Tea
Angry at God for what never should be
Lovers and others together, not me
Take me away when I'm done
With my afternoon tea
More than just a love song, I'm fairly certain Afternoon Tea is about a lonely man facing his imminent death, either from old age or disease, which is a lot worse than the fact that no one sent you any candy this year.
Big Country - Come Back To Me
I have your child inside me
But you will never know
I never will forget you
As I watch that child grow
One of my favourite things about this live clip is the way Stuart clowns around with the audience just before and even during this powerful performance of a heartbreaking song, giving it a bittersweet quality.
The Smiths - Girlfriend In A Coma
Do you really think she'll pull through?
What's worse than no girlfriend? How about a girlfriend in a coma? I know, I know, Morrissey insists that it's serious, but I've always felt this was one of the ironically hysterical songs ever written. To me, it's a parody of melodramatic sad songs, and I can't help but laugh out loud every time I hear it, making it a perfect Valentine's Day pick-me-up.
