The Hold Steady - "Stuck Between Stations" live on Letterman

This week, another late night live clip, this time featuring one the absolute best songs from last year, which includes one the best lines from any rock song ever:

She was a really cool kisser and she wasn't all that strict of a Christian

The singer's voice a bit rough in this clip - whiskey-soaked, perhaps? - but hey, that's live rock 'n' roll for ya.

I love how this song manages to wear its early Springsteen influence on its sleeve but still manages to sound fresh. It's as though this is a song Bruce never got around to writing, and now he probably wishes he had.

I've always had a soft spot for kick ass rock bands like the Hold Steady who are hopelessly and unashamedly fugly. The world's greatest makeup artists and wardrobe consultants wouldn't stand a chance of making this band look cool, and it doesn't matter one damn bit. These guys got where they are by writing great songs, not by looking good in black mascara.
